HAMILTON WINTER SHOW.

LARGE INCREASE IN ENTRIES.

A SPLENDID EXHIBITION.

[BY TELEGRAPH.OWN CORRESPONDENT.]

Hamilton, Tuesday. The sixth annual Waikato Winter Show was opened today by the Hon. A. M. Myers {Minister for Railways), in somewhat boisterous weather. ■

Although the season has been disadvantageous to agricultural and horticultural pursuits, the show may be termed a record one, the entries showing a great increase over those of last year. The entries for 1911 numbered 2652, as compared with this year's total of 3074. There were 50 butter exhibits last year, while this year there are 132. In cheese, there are 50 entries, as against five last year, and hams and bacon have also increased, In the agricultural section there is an increase of 100 entries, and the horticultural section shows an increase of 200 entries. The entries in the schools section have more than doubled, .and they exceed 600. In the industrial section there is an increase of over 100 entries, the total number being 686. The poultry section is the best ever seen in Hamilton. A feature of the show is the display of field produce, the turnips and mangolds being the finest ever shown in the district. The machinery exhibit is also better than ever before, j Raglan sent in a distinct court, which is excellently displayed, and the exhibit of the Kuakura farm of instruction is very fine, and shows well the work the insti- ' tution has been doing. An excellent display has been made by the Waikato Farmers' Co-operative Bacon Company, and this is a fine exemplification of the progress made by the pig industry in the district. The locally-made machinery shown proves that the capital of the Waikato may in time become a manufacturing centre of some importance. Entries have come from one end of New Zealand to the other, and the show has been excellently arranged. During the opening ceremony the Mayor (Mr. A. E. Manning) spoke strongly in favour of the show, as indicating the progress the district had made. After Messrs. R. F. Bollard. M.P., J. G. Coates, M.P., and J. A. Young, M.P., had spoken, the Hon. A. M. Myers (Minister for Railways) declared 'the show open. The Prize List.
