OIL FUEL. Reporting ,; upoa,:,the' .Instalment >. of - oil-burning engines >on' ■tin*'-. 'Grand Trunk Pacific steamers Prince Rupert arid Prince George, Captain 0. H. Nicholson, manager of the line, saya the advant- ■ ages {gained > in. the use of this fuel as compared ; with coal, although -varying; according: to. the coni difcions under > which it* is used, can -, nevertheless bei readily appreciated. c 'The quantity required i to : perform ' the " same service is leas -both-- in ! weight and in space occupied, with * proportionate decrease in fuel bills. It has been the ex- ' perience alsO at shipowners who .have changed i from Coal to oil ■ that charges for boiler maintenance have practically disappeared. Another most important economy is the reduction in the number of firemen and trimmers, with the consequent lowering of pay roll and cost of subsistence. Because of the absence of smoke, cinders, and coaldueti oil-burning snips are not" only cleaner, but the Supplies for scrubbing and painting are much less, and while it l-ia difficult to calculate economies from such ,soarce*"they. are appreciable never, theless. In ;■:' point of efficiency, the advantages are quite as marked, and while it is again difficult to calculate definitely the future oil supply, still, there are no ;present indications of failure in thia direction. Fueling facilities are becoming more adequate, and 7 : ships may now take oil at all vCalifomian ports, .Portland (O.), Taeoma, Seattle, and Vancouver on the Pacific coast."
