GIFTS FOR SIR. J. CARROLL.
IA COMPLIMENT FROM GISBORNE. [by TELEGRAPH.—OWN correspondent.] Gisborne, Saturday. The Carroll testimonial proposal has been taken up enthusiastically, and nearly £300 has been raised. Invitations have been issued to the Prime Minister and members of the present and past Ministries to attend the function, which will be held on Wednesday, May 15. It is intended to accord the visitors a fitting reception on their arrival. The exact nature of the function has not been quite decided upon, but a haka of welcome by 100 natives has been promised. The committee has practically approved of the proposal that one portion of the presentation should take the form of a handsome tea and coffee service and salver of solid silver, which
should provide a lasting memento of the occasion. The suggestion was made that the balance of the money should be de-
voted to a purse of sovereigns for Sir James, but it is more probable that he will be made the recipient of several useful articles.
