j OPENING TOURNAMENT. UNIVERSITY WINS SENIOR SEVEN-A-SIDE. AN INTERESTING PROGRAMME. The official opening: of the 1913 hockey season was held at the Polo Ground, Bemuera, on Saturday, the occasion being marked as usual by a sports meeting and a seven-a-aide tournament for all grades of men and lady players of the game. The weather on the whole was better than might have been anticipated. The breeze was somewhat too chilly for the convenience of spectators, it is true, but the afternoon's sport was well worth the sacrifice of some personal comfort. The number of people who turned out to witness the programme affords a convincing testimony to the growing popularity of the game, while the presence of numerous photographers, including one motion-picture operator, shows that nockey's claims to public attention are being recognised. The sports events, which came first, were got off with commendable promptitude. The races generally were well contested, the only possible exception being the men's relay race, •won in rather hollow fashion by the University quartette of sprinters. At the conclusion of the races a brief pause was made, while Mr. H. Bees George (vice-president of, the association) presented the prizes. During the afternoon a musical programme was rendered by the Garrison Band, while afternoon'tea was served from a booth. . RUNNING EVENTS.
