PASSING OF HEMI MATENGA.
• • ♦ BIG TANGI AT WAKAPUAKA. [BY TELEGRAPH. —PRESS ASSOCIATION.] Wabapitaka, Sunday. The funeral obsequies of the late Henri Matenga (Martin), husband of Julia Martin, the Grace Darling of New Zealand, were conducted this afternoon at the native burial ground at Wakapuaka, near Te Pui'a Island,and within a few miles of the Eastern Extension Cable Station. The deceased was a well-known and noted Maori chieftain, and there was a large attendance of influential natives from all parts of the Dominion. For upwards of a week it had been impossible to engage a vehicle from any stable in Nelson for the funeral, and the vehicles were numbered in hundreds. The tangi will never again bo equalled in the Nelson district, and cost over £600. The burial service was conducted by Archdeacon Grace and the Rev." F. Bennett.
