The total amount of sugar produced In North aueensland last year was 112,313 tone. Taking til at an average of £13 per ton, this Industry represents £1.460,059 to the north railways. In the North Queensland sugar Industry the prospect for thia year's season is not very favour, able. The delayed and poor wot eeaeon has retarded the growth of the cane so that it is expected the crop harvest will fall considerably short of the previous one. The good season ■which is now assured in North Queensland baa been responsible for many sales of large station* in the north-west during the past three months. The sale Is reported of Palgonally, the largest cattle station in the northwest, comprising 1500 square miles, with 60,000 head of cattle and 400 horses. The purchasers were the New Zealand and Australian Land Company, Limited. It la understood that the pur- / chase prico ran into six figures. The present seaswx in Sooth Australia his been the most satisfactory on record so far as the exportation of fresh fruit is concerned. The 1908 record shipments of 153,066 case* was eoliwed last •week, when the total was carried to 15&VJRI cases, compared with about 64,000 cases to even date last year. The butter export season hot 'mushed •with the result anticipated—* big deficiency compared with last season's output. In general trade business continues fairly steady, though there is not that spring which usually accompanies anticipation of a good season. Large shipments of fruit continue to be made from Hobartto England. The largest cargo boat that has entered Australian waters, the Federal-Houlder-Shire liner Argyllshire, of- tone, «'■ berthed easily alongside the pier at Hobart awl took on board a record cargo of 130,000 cases of fruit for .England.
