New York, May 2. A terrible conflagration has occurred at Cleveland, on the shore of Lake Erie, Ohio.

An oil barge exploded and in a short time an immense quantity of flaming gasolene overspread the Cuyahoga River.

Five men, who were on the barge, were blown to pieces.

The firemen were unable to approach the flames and the result was that the docks were completely destroyed.

A, tug and other vessels at Crescent Beach were also burned.

Cleveland, which is the largest city of Ohio, has a population of between 400,000 and 500,000. It is situated on the south shore of Lake Erie, 350 miles by rail from Chicago. The Cuyahoga River, which forms an inner harbour, runs through the city. The industries include the various manufactures of iron, the refining of petroleum, and many other manufactures. The docks are situated along the river.
