THE CHINESE REPUBLIC

A WOULD-BE DICTATOR.

PREMIER AND PRESIDENT.

By Telegraph.—Press Association.—Copyright, (Received May 3. 11.5 p.m.)

London, May 3. Reuter's Pekin correspondent states that there are growing indications that Tang-shao-yi (the Chinese Premier) is endeavouring to assume the practice of a dictatorship, and to relegate Yuan-shih-kai (the President of the Republic) to the back-' ground.

Tang-shao-yi, it is stated, demands to be supplied with unlimited funds with nominal supervision. Shen-yuan, the fanatical Kansu leader, is assuming a bellicose attitude. ,The native press declares that he beheaded his son for professing republicanism.
