Per Talune, from the Cook and Society .Islands: 1650 tons fruit and general cargo. The Island steamer Chilota was docked yesterday morning for survey and overhaul. Hie Wanaka is fixed to nail at noon to-day for the Bluff, Oaroaru, and Timaru to load produce for Napier, Gisborne, and Auckland. The Monowai will change her berth to the -Kin-street Wharf this morning in order to load transhipments for Southern porta ex the Talune from the Cook awl Society .Islands. Due at Auckland from West port to-morrow, the collier Waipori will berth at the Hobson-street Wharf to discharge her cargo of coal. The Waiotahi, after being detained at Opotiki for several days l>y adverse weather, left the Jlav of Plenty port yesterday morning for Auckland. She is due here early this morning. The "coastal steamer Ngatiawa was successful in crossing the Opotiki bar inwards yesterday morning Irtin.Ohiwa. She is to leave this morning for Auckland direct, and should arrive here about 8 a.m. tomorrow. It is expected that the Shaw,'Savill and Albion steamer Kia Ora will ' now be despatched from Wellington at daybreak to-morrow for London. Amongst latest charters announced is that of the barque Marjorie Craig, which has been fixed to load a cargo of flour at Warrnambool for Auckland. " '

The Union Company's' intercolonial'liber Moeraki left Wellington last evening for Sydney direct. She is due at Sydney on Tuesday next.

After completing her discharge of Liverpool «»argo at Dunedin, the Federal-Houlder-Shire liner Surrey will be docked for cleaning and painting prior to loading Homeward cargo.

The Hoddart-Parker steamer Wimmera is due at Dunedin to-morrow morning from Auckland and East Coast ports. She leaves Dunedin again on Tuesday afternoon for Auckland and Sydney, via way ports, and is due back here on May 12.

The Atua arrived at Lautoka at 7 a.m. on Thursday from Sydney. She is expected to leave Levuka at 5 p.m. to-day for Samoa, Tonga, and Auckland. The Atua is due here on May 16.

The Rosamond left Picton at 8 a.m. yesterday for New Plymouth and Onchungn. She has 4000 *ack» of chaff- on--board for Onehunga, where she is due on Monday morning.

The Kaitangata, after discharge of her cargo of timber from Greymouth at Melbourne, goes to Adelaide and Newcastle to load for New Zealand. The barque From was floated out of the Graving Dock yesterday morning ami berthed at the Hailway Wharf to commence loading stores for Noujwa and Surprise Island.

The Union Compitny's big steamer Waitemnta arrived at Newcastle on Thursday from Calcutta and Singapore. After loading' 3UOO tons of coal the vessel leaves for Auckland, Wellington, Lytt-el-ton, and Dunedin. She is due here at the latter end of next week.

The New Zealand Shipping Company advise that the Auckland passengers by the Buahine from London will .arrive hero by the Main Trunk express to-morrow morning. The Auckland cargo will be forwarded by the Mokoia, leaving Wellington on Monday and arriving here on Thursday next.. ■ •

The Richardson Line steamer Koutunui, after sheltering for some tune at Hicks'a Bay, proceeded to Tauranga .to replenish her bunkers. Maraina, which sailed from Auckland on April 12 for Suva, Honolulu, and Vancouver, arrived at the Canadian port at 7 a,m. on Thursday last. The Mara ma is scheduled to sail again on the return voyage on May 15, and is due back at Auckland on Tuesday, June 4, and Sydney on June 8. HAUKOTO FROM WESTPORT. Zealantlia, the Union Company was advised yesterday that the liner expects to reach Suva at 10 a.m. to-day from Vancouver and Honolulu. The vessel, which is en route to Auckland and Sydney, is expected to resume her voyage from Suva this evening, arid in that ease she should arrive lure on Tuesday afternoon next. "An Old Auckland Shipmaster" writes as follows :—" It may interest the general public, as well as navigators, to know that, according' to measurements of different charts the Tasman Sea is stretching. The distance from the North Cape to Sydney- by careful measurements on the Admiralty chart, of 1877 was 1050 mile#; in the New Zealand Pilot of 1837 it was set down et ICB6 miles; and on the Pacific Track Chart of 1897 it was put down as 1038 miles. By the latest Admiralty chart (19G7) the distance is stated as 1105 miles, thus showing an increase in the distance of 55 miles during 30 years. Working the distance out by Mercntor sailing, it is now, as it was 30 years" ago, 1089.3 miles. Now, which chart is correct?" C. lioss, arrived in the stream at Auckland Irom the' Cools and Society Islands. ; After being granted pratique by the port health officer, she berthed at the Hobson-street Wharf. The vessel brought 1650 tons of fruit and general cargo, the various lines of fruit being in excellent condition. The purser reports that the Talune sailed from Auckland at 5 p.m. on April 9 and arrived at Rarotonga at 9 p.m. on April 14, after a fine weather passage. Departure was taken from Raro tonga 'it 6 p.m. oil April 15 for Raiatea, where the steamer commenced . loading. Call* were then made at Papeete, Huabin-e, Aitutaki, Mangaio, and Rarotonga, final departure being taken from the latter port at 6 a.m. on April 26 for Auckland. Strong south-east winds and rough seas were experienced until April 27, thence light variable winds to the 29th. On Wednesday the vessel encountered strong westerly winds and very rough seas, which lasted until making the New Zealand coast at 7.30 a.m. yesterday. The Talune will be* floated into Calliope Dock on Monday morning for cleaning and painting. She is scheduled to sail at 10 a.m. on Wednesday next for the Cook and Society Islands.
