LOCAL GOVERNMENT BILL.

CONFERENCE ; REPRESENTATION.

The Local Government Bill, "was discussed at. .some length by the Manukau County Conference at their meeting yesterday. The Chairman {Mr. E. Allen) , said the circular issued - by the Hospital Board, at the instance . of. the ' Minister for ; Internal Affairs, calling a conference.of delegates of local bodies in the hospital district, to elect seven delegates to represent the district at a general conference to bo held in. Wellington to discuss the Local Government Bill, -which is to come before Parliament next session.

Mr. W. F. Massey, M.P. for Franklin, said that ii' the Wellington conference were to be of any value at all every local body should have a representative present. He expressed himself as strongly opposed to the limiting of the Auckland district «> seven delegates, and denied that the Hospital Board or the Government had the right to limit Auckland's representatives to seven. As to whether the conference would be of much use, he did not know. The Bill had not been taken seriously_ by the local bodies. The expression of opinion of those who had expert opinion of local government affairs would, howevef,prove very valuable if placed on record. To enable this to be obtained, each county should bo represented. Mr. F. W. Lang, M.P. for Manukau, said the seven men chosen, by the conference might only represent one particular form, of local government.
