THE DRAINAGE SCHEME.

TIME NEEDED TO COMPLETE. ABOUT THREE YEARS., Mr. W. E. Bush, city engineer, informed a Herald representative yesterday that the drainage fchcme, which is now in progress in the city, of Auckland _ and suburbs, will not be completed until 1915. The work already in progress or contracted for comprises the following sections of the main sewer: —Section 2, across Hobson Bay; section 3, from Hobson Bay to the Domain section 4, from the Domain to Freeman's Bay and section 5, from Freeman's Bay to Cox Creek. The branch sewers No. 2, from Hobson Bay to Portland Road; No. 3, from Hobson Bay to Newmarket; No. 4a, from the Domain to Jermyri-strect; and No. 7d, from Archliill Gully to Mount Eden, are also in progress or contracted for. The work mentioned should be finished by or before March next. The work not yet started or contracted for is as follows Buildings at storage tanks; main sewer, sections No. 6, from "Cox's Creek to Great North Road; No. 7, from Great North Road to Oakley Creek; branch sewers No. 3, from Newmarket railway station to junction of Great South Road and Manukau Roads No. 7b, from Archhill Gully to Mount Eden (near Dominion Road); No. 5, from Willow-street to Marine Parade ; No. 6, from Richmond Road to Jervois Road; No. 8, from main sewer, near Great North Road, to Mount Eden boundary (near Mount Roskill). It is likely that the main sewer, section 6, from Cox's Creek to Great North Road; branch sewer No. _3, from Newmarket railway station to junction of Great South Road and Manukau Road ; and the branch sewer, No. 5, from Willow-street to Marino Parade; will be the next work put in hand in connection ' with . the scheme. ; The engineer hopes, however, that all the contracts will bo let by next March. . -;. ■ " At last night'S meeting of the City Council, Mr. Bush reported that the reconstruction. of the Boston x Road sewer was practically complete, and that the existing sewer, below the V point of reconstruction, and running parallel with the railway, tc-wards Newmarket, had been so badly laid that the back fall had caused, a backing in the now sewer, and for a distance of over 800 ft from Boston Road there was a big depositin some cases of nearly a foot in depth. Between 800 ft and 1000 ft would have to .be reconstructed. at an approximate cost of £1500, and tho engineer recommended that he be authorised to. obtain the necessary sanction of the Railway Department for the work to be carried out. The recommendation was adopted.
