SENIOR GRADE CHAMPIONSHIP

GRAFTON, COLLAPSE AGAINST

PARNELL.

PINE BOWLING BY OLLIFF.

PONSONBY WINS IN FOURTH GRADE.

VERY few of the 500 people who gathered at Eden Park on Saturday afternoon to watch the first day's play in the final match, between Grafton and Parnell, for the. senior grade championship expected Grafton to collapse so badly as they did. But it was not anticipated that Olliff would bowl so well, and that the wicket would suit him so much.

The wicket was slow, but with one end faster than the other. MacCormick. the Grafton captain won tho toss, and decided to bat. Horspool and Sloinan opened against" the bowling of Olliff and Kerr. Each bowler sent down an over, and then the Grafton batsmen began a procession from and* tho wickets. Olliff had the faster end of the wicket to bowl on, and ho maintained a splendid length, a big break, and plenty of "sting" in his bowling, white Kerr, at the other end, assisted him excellently. Ollitf's second over produced two wickets, Kerr got one, then Olliff a third, and four wickets had fallen with but two runs scored, fortunately lor the reputation of our batsmen, such an opening of an innings is rarely seen in senior cricket in New Zealand.

Fryer and Cullen made a valiant attempt to stem the onslaught, and tor a while they raised tho hopes of Grafton's supporters, although tho scoring was slow. Fryer showod the most enterprising! batting of the innings, while Cullen. playing back to the bowling, kept up his end well. But Olliff was not to be denied, and when the score had reached 24, of which Fryer had made 19. he bowled the ex-Christchurcn player. Mason started to go out to Olliff, as Fryer had done, but he was given out Ibw to Olliff' after he had scored two. Cullen was the next to go. and the remaining batsmen made such a poor stand tuat the whole team was .out when the score stood at 35, of which live were obtained from extras. '-■ , , „. , ~ Olliff finished with the splendid bowling analysis of 7 wickets for 16 runs, and Kerr with three- wickets for 14 runs. The former sent down 10 overs, of which four were maidens, while Kerr bowled 11 overs, of which fivo were maidens. Both men well deserved tho ovation they received on coming off the field. Parnell's innings was opened by Ellin and Wright, the bowlers being Mason and Pratt. The batsmen were cautious in fact, the scoring for the afternoon was very slow, close on three hours being occupied in the making of 136 runs. It was soon found that Grafton's attack was inferior to Parnell's, and 20 runs had been scored before Ellis was smartly caught by Cullen, off a ball from Harvie." Olliff only got two runs, and two wickets were down for 23 runs, Wright assisted Anthony to take the score to 43, and then he, too. was caught by Cullen, this time off Neill s bowling. Nelll quickly dismissed homervell, but the partnership which followed, between Anthony and Kissling. proved unbreakable to Grafton, despite frequent changes in the bowling. When stumps were drawn Parnell had made 101 for four wickets. Anthony scored 45, not out, with good batting, and Kissling was careful in his compilation of 16, not out. fteill, who obtained two of the wickets for 17 runs, was the best of the Grafton bowlers. On the same ground another champzon-ahip-that of i.he fourth grade-was decided, but in this case the match was confined to the one afternoon. The contesting teams were Ponsonby and Parnell, and Ponsonby won by 126 runs to 61. There waa'some Good bowling in this match also. Roberts (Ponsonby) took five wickets for 21 runs, M. England (Ponsonby) two for 3. and K. Davidson (Parnell) five for 30 The most successful batsman was White (Ponsonbv). Who scored 38. not out.. The game was really a re-play or the third meeting of the two teams, but by winning it Portsonby have obtained such a lead in the comoetition-they arc seven points ahead -that thev have made absolutely certain of the championship. It is the first time that any Ponsonby district team has won a cricket championship. THE SENIOR SCORES. The scores in the senior match were as follow PARNELL V. GRAFTON.
