ACCIDENT TO FERRY BOAT.
'g|IFDPUKE COLLIDES .WITH WHARF. ;w»> " ~~— ■ ■ : V;, The Takapuna Tramways and Ferry Com- .>■ pany's steamer Pupuke was considerably •.Wvydamaged yesterday morning, as a result of colliding with, the Northcoto ferry tee. | ' The Pupuke was approaching the wharf i';'|?pn,tho return trip from Bayswater, about 11 am. In response to the usual signal £ the .'vessel had slowed down, as she ap- ■ - proached the wharf. The signal was then o given to go astern, but this did not ap'pi ( pear to be responded to from the engineM $ room, for the stem of the vessel struck /the ferro-concrete wharf with great force, . -jff k - the stempctt and bulwarks being stove in, Jjgiiis&d the rudder rendered useless as a result of the impact. . The cause of the mishap is said to be due to the fact that the engine stuck on the dead-centre when the signal was given to go astern. All the damage done was i - above the waterlina. One of the piles of i the wharf was shattered a good deal in r consequence of the collision. I ; || No delay was occasioned to passengers '.. through the accident, the I'upuko'a run- ' lung being immediately taken up by Bradney and Binns' steamer Onewa. . The Pupuke will be placed in dock to- • day to undergo repairs. It is expected 1 that she will be ready to take up her | ..running again in four or five days.
