MINING NEWS.

WAIHI. FURTHER DROP IN SHARES. A further weakening was noticeable at tho opening of business in Waihi shares yesterday morning, lines being transferred at 38s, which was a drop of la 3d per share on Saturday's closing prices. This was attributed to advices received recently, reporting a pinching of tho Martha reef at No. 10 level, as no further news had been wired to local headquarters. TAIRUA. GOLDEN HILLS. RETURN OF £767. The details of the milling operations in the Tairua Golden Hills mine for the period ended February 24, are as follow:— T .1 no. v...n_• ■ J

Tons crushed, 618; bullion recovered from plates, £239; from cyanide plant., £154; contained in sand, slime, etc., still under treatment, £294; value of tailings as discharged, £80. Total content. 1 , of 618 tons value £767, equal to £1 4s 9d per ton. Owing to this being tho first period of crushing, the proportion of ore still under treatment is large. Tho ore now being crushed is worth 303 per ton, and it is probable the grade will further improve. The drive northwards iq No. 3 level has now penetrated for a distance of 50ft a chute of ore worth fully £2 per ton. The reef in the face is about 4ft 6in wide, and still carries excellent value. This development is of importance, as there arc substantial backs at this point. The crosscut at No. 4 (bottom) level has not yet cut the reef. A leader was recently intersected carrying traces of gold. Simultaneously the water in the winze below No. 3 level has started to fall, and it is possible this leader may be a branch of tho main lode. Driving is being continued.

BREMNER'S FREEHOLD. The manager of Bremner'e Freehold mine at Coromandel wires that on Saturday last he intersected a new leader in the east crosscut showing gold in the stone. ...:, / HAURAKI REEFS. In the Haur&ki Reefs mine, Coromandel, the rise to connect with No. 2 level has been extended 24ft. The reef has greatly improved, and show? strong gold through the quartz, although no picked stone has come to hand. In tho drive off the rise, in the Hauraki end of the 400 ft level, a great improvement, the manager states, is apparent in the reef. The reef is now over Ift 3in wide, and some good colours of gold were seen last Friday. Generally speaking the prospects here are described as promising. Tho drive is in 39ft. The manager hopes by the current week to have the water out of the workings to a sufficient depth to allow of an examination of No. 3 level.

OLD HAURAKI. The manager of the Old Hauraki mine, Coromandel, reports that work in the -seaward face at the 400 ft level has been suspended so that a No, 4 block can be got ready for sloping. At No. 1 block one stopo is in progress; at No. 2 block two aro being worked, and a few colours of gold have been seen. From No. 3 block 41b of picked stone was obtained. At tho 300 ft level the seaward face is now in 35Qft, and is now over the rise at the 400 ft level. From here 51b of picked stone was obtained last week. In No. 2 block three stopes are being worked, and a little gold continues to be seen. SAXON. The manager of the Saxon mine, Thames, reports that progress in the sinking of the shaft has been retarded owing to various causes, and the gas is also troublesome. The bottom of the shaft is now within about 4ft of the chamber at No. 6 level, and by the end of the present week the shaft will bo down to that level. WAIOTAHI. The manager of the Waiotahi Gold Mining Company reports for the week as follows :—" No 7 level : The drive east on the footwall dropper is now in a distance of 57ft from the crosscut. The reef has, however, heaved in to the left-hand side of the drive, and in consequence there is now little or no quartz in the face. 1000 ft level : The main crosscut has now been driven into the Waiotahi ground for a distance of 40ft, and a further 400 ft of driving will bring it about opposite the Waiotahi shaft. The country now in the face is of a close nature, and in consequence little or no water is issuing from the face." PAYABLE PROSPECTING. [BT TELEGRAPH. —PRESS ASSOCIATION.) s Whangarei, Monday. The Whenuaroa Prospecting Company have received reliable assays, showing £4 lis 2d per ton in gold and silver. from samples, of stone sent to the Thames School of Mines. Other samples sent also yielded good payable results.

SOUTHERN MINING RETURNS. The following telegram was posted on the Exchange yesterday afternoon :— Progress Mine : Crushed 1980 tons, yielding bullion valued at £830 cyanided 2050 tons, yielding £464; estimated value of sulphurets £260. Wealth of Nations : Crushed 1886 tone, fielding bullion valued at £2464; cyanided 373 tons, yielding £522; estimated value of sulphurets £103. Blackwater Mines : Crushed 2512 tons, yielding bullion value £4416; cyanided 1433 ton*, yielding bullion value £968; estimated value of sulphurets £895.

NOTES. Tho superintendent of tho Thames deep levels crosscut (Mr. Geo. Warne) reports : —Tho contract for driving 500 ft at the 1000 ft level has been completed, making tho total driven from the shaft 1632 ft. Tho crosscut it now 40ft into the Waiotahi Company's ground. The face ie in close country, and little or no water is making. The manager of the Occidental Consolidated mine, Thames, reports that the south drive on No. 2 reef is now in 79ft from the crosscut. In' the face tho reef is looking well, the lode itself being from 9in to lain wide of nicely mineralised stone. The last breaking- clown gave 161b of picked stone (as wired). In the stope on the Occidental reef colours of gold are still seen in the quartz. In the New Success mine, Coromandel, sft of the lode has been stripped, and broken down. The manager reports that the lead looks well, showing very strong blotches of coarse gold in the stone. The outlook is described as promising, the country being well mineralised. At the Golden Belt mine, Neavesville, the No. 2 rise in low level is now up 91ft, and the country is good. No. 2 winze is down 12ft. The manager of the Mountain King mine, Kuaotunu, reports that another short break down of the reef produced ore of equally good values to recent reports. A cross-head in the country has come in and caused the lode to make a sudden jump towards the hangingwall side. It is yet premature to say what effect this will have on the lode values. Gold is still obtainable at the other side of the "jump," but so far very little of same has been broken down. The winze being sunk from the upper main level is a few feet ahead of the company's lowest level, and the last two breaking-downs in the same have given ore of very good values, better than hitherto obtained in winze. At the battery the- amalgam is showing up remarkably, well.
