In the Brisbane Supreme Court Denis M'Carthy wis charged with the murder of George Smith at Brisbane on January 1 last. He was found guilty of manslaughter, with a strong recommendation to mercy, and sentenced to 15 years' imprisonment with hard labour. The Chief Justice said he would have sent the prisoner to penal servitude for many moire years had it not been for "the recommendation of the jury.
