ON THE RIFLE RANGE.

THE TRENTHAM MEETING,

IMPORTANT WORK BEGINS.

AUCKLANDERS SHOOT WELL.

I.BY TKt-EGBJ.rH. — PHE3S ASSOCIATION ..]

Thextham, Monday. When the competitors mustered this morning their numbers were augmented by two (G. Loveday and S. Currie) from the Ohura Club. These two men had been detained by a special meeting of the Ohura Town Council, of which G. Loveday is chairman and Currie a member. Considering that they had been detained on public, duty the council allowed them to take part in the championship series.

The serious business of the riflemen, so far as the majority of the competitors were concerned, commenced this morning with the first match of the championship series. The weather was hardly favourable to good shooting. There was a. nasty southeast jobbly breeze, which- made calculations at times absolutely impossible, as it caused nasty eddies. Operations started with the Auckland .Match at 300 yds and 500 yds, 10 shots. At the 300 yds range Elliott (Akarana), a tyro who has a greater reputation as a miniature rifle shot than as a range shot, took little notice of the wind and put on a possible. When-the men started at 500 yds the weather was better. The light had improved and altogether the general conditions pointed to good scoring. Elliott, who had made a possible at 300 yds., was closely watched. With his first four shots he found the- bull's-eye, but the breeze, which had returned, carried off his next to the right and he got four. His next shot found the bull's-eye. Then he got away to the left for another four, finding the bull's-eye with his next three shots. This gave him the phenomenal score of 98, two off the possible.

After lunch the Wellington Match, 10 shots at 500 yds and 600 yds, started. At 500 yds possibles were put up by R. King (Opaki) and Potter ('Auckland)., At the commencement at 600 yds the weather was not nearly as bad, but there were odd snatches of wind, which spoilt several otherwise promising scores. Atkinson (Auckland), who had made 46 at 500 yds, came along with 47 here, and Potter (Auckland), one of the possible makers at 500 yds, got 44. It is not often that two officers in a squadron shoot so well as Captain Potter and Lieutenant Atkinson. Taylor (Blenheim Rifle Club), who had put up 46 at 500 yds, fired with considerable success here, only getting off the the bull's-eye with his fourth and seventh shots. He piled up 48, and beat Potter for first place on the count. Atkinson by. his 93 here placed himself at the top of the aggregate, scoring 186 to Elliott's, 182.
