WAIHI MINERS' UNION.
[BY TELEGRAPH.—OWN CORRESPONDENT.] Waihi, Monday. A special meeting of members of the Waihi Miners' and Workers' Union was held on Saturday night, to consider the advisability of nominating a candidate for the Mayoralty, and to deal with other matters. The meeting was held in camera, but it is reported that after considerable discussion it was decided to nominate a member of the union for the Mayoralty, the selection to be made by ballot, and also two candidates for the extraordinary vacancies on the Borough Council, the platform to which the candidates have to pledge themselves being that submitted last year, which provided for the municipalisation of the meat supply and other planks calculated to cheapen the cost of living. A lengthy .debate is said to have taken place relative to the decision of the Management Committee, which held that* a member of a contract party in one of the mines, who had met with an accident and appointed a substitute in his place, was within his rights in taking up his job again when he so desired. The party was not unanimously in favour of the member (who subsequently entered upon a business of his own) reserving the right to resume his job should necessity arise, and opinions on the action of the committee were divided. At last night's meeting, it is reported that, following on the debate, the vice-president (Mr. McLennan), the secretary (Mr. C. McMillan), and three members of the Executive Committee of the union announced their intention of resigning office.
