This morning Harry Cooke, who was fined 40s and costs recently for having failed to register under the Defence Act, repeated the procedure of passive resistance he adopted when lie . was .fined some months ago, and declined to pay the amount demanded by the State for his breach of the Act. Cooke was arrested on warrant at his work, and was sent to Lyttelton to serve 21 days. The police have other warrants out for failure to pay fines imposed for breaches of the Defence Act. These will be executed as opportunity arises.

The Magistrate said that, such a state of affairs could not be tolerated. As this was the first case of the kind hero he did .not wish to inflict the maximum penalty. No doubt the defendant had been influenced by pernicious literature that was being, circulated in the Dominion. Defendant was fined £1 on each offence, in default three clays' imprisonment on each charge.
