BISHOP SELWYN'S PROTEGE.
ADMITTED TO WORKHOUSE.

London, January 24. A middle-aged roan named John Bailey has been admitted to the Cannock Workhouse, and the Board of Guardians was informed that the late Bishop J. R. Selwyn had spent £800 on his educationBailey came of a bricklayer's family on the Anglesey estates, and as a boy he sang in this choir at Armitage. village church. Afterwards, for seven years, ho sang in Lichfield Cathedral, and took part in choral competitions in many cathedral towns.
When he was fourteen Bishop Selwyn, at hits own request, apprenticed him to a confectioner, who had a business in London, but he ran away, and was discovered at Leicester. Returning to his native county, he held a deputyship at Lichfield Cathedral, being on duty three months in the year. He next entered the service of the fifth Marquis of Anglesey, and afterwards that of the late Duke of Sutherland, living for seven years at Trentham Hall. While there he fell in love with the wardrobe maid of the late Duchess, and married her.
Oik; night, according to his story, Her Grace entered the kitchen and accused him of being the worse for drink. He denied the charge, and there was a scene, •which ended in his pushing tho Duchess out ot the kitchen. On the next day he received notico to leave, together with six months' wages. He then took to driving the mail, and on the death of his wife obtained work as a coal miner at Cannock. Meeting with an accident to one of his hands he left Ihe district, and has sine© tramped from place to place..
