' WATERSIDERS' PROPOSAL^.
By Telegraph.— Association.--Copyright ..... (Received February 29. 9.55 p.m.) ' . Brtsbaxi:, February 29. Work on the wharves is proceeding steadily with non-unionist labour: i 1 Mr. Coyne, chairman of the Strike Committee, announced to-day that he would be unable to make any statement with regard to the negotiations with the' Employers' Federation before to-morrow. The tramways' night service has been resinned. The police have taken particular precautions 'against; molestation of the employees. ; .■■:., •.-.-■■■'" A delegate from, the Sydney" Wharf Labourers' Union, addressing a meeting here, declared that he had been sent to try and arrange an amicable settlement of the strike. He stated that tho waterside workers were prepared to open • all th« port-; of Australia, if the employers would not victimise strikers. *• .: Sydxey, February 29. Owing to the wharf labourers holding up the steamer ,Arawatta the has been withdrawn, and. the crew paid of)'. They. held up the steamers .Mourilyan and Wollowra, alleging that they * were carrying non-union Queensland cargo. > (Received February 29, 9.35 p.m.) Sydney, February 29. other troubles settled. , fire brigadesme:* RESUME. (Received February 29, 9.35 p.m.) V Adelaide, February 29. The fire brigadosmcn's strike has- been settled. ;/„ ■"}■•..■' '*"". ; 1 -/''ji; A conference resulted in the signing of a tentative agreement, . whereby the men ■waived the question of affiliation.of their union with the Trades and Labour Council, and agreed that all ■ future disputes shall be referred to arbitration. BROKEN HILL STRIKE ENDED.;: Stdxey, February 29. The Broken Hill hotel strike lias been settled, the men's claims ; having been granted. • , . ■ ■■ • CONCILIATION AT NEWCASTLE. '"'■: Newcastle, February 29. ' The colliery employers . have established • a joint conciliation committee for the pur- ;; pose of settling disputes, with Mr. ; Cha.ies Hibblo as chairman. Negotiations have been proceeding for a considerable time, and the appointment.; of a chairman proved a stumbling block. * ■ - » MARRIED MEN'S UNION. t A movement has been started in Sydney for the formation of a* labour union of married men to combat- the strike 'tendencies of young unmarried members of unions. It is pointed.out that the Brisbane strike was entered, upon .' "to : satisfy the very questionable claims of a. few ■'■unthinking', "careless, Irani boys," and that there ; may bo a recurrence-: of such industrial trouble at any moment. _ Tho view ' token is that it is the unmarried men in the'unions, who have- no, family • responsibilities to' steady them, and the professional -agitators ; who are seeking billets, or notoriety, who generally cause the trouble.; The remedy, it I is considered, is for the married men to form a union of their town, with* hone but married men as members, with the right to preference over single men. -'^m^-.
