COMPLAINT BY CHINESE CONSUL. "UNLAWFUL AND ARBITRARY." [TJX TELECRAPU.— ASSOCIATION.] Christcitorch, Wednesday. The Chinese Consul at Wellington has addressed to the Mayor (Mr. J. J. Dougall) a letter of complaint, arising out of disturbances before a newly-instituted Chinese fruit shop in Cashel-street on Saturday night. The Consul says:—"lt is some months now since when visiting your beautiful city I had the pleasure and honour of calling on you to pay my respects, and I with delight recall the courtesy and goodwill shown to me on that occasion. Knowing are in sympathy with the struggle of my countrymen in this land to e«rn a livelihood, and confident that you would like nothing but fair play extended to them, I take the liberty of drawing your kind attention to the disturbances which you have doubtless read of in the Christ church newspapers, and which occurred in your city on Saturday night in relation to the newlyestablished Chinese fruit shop of Wah Lee in Cashel-street, which some of the European fruiterers and hooligans atj tempted illegally and I 'rough jealousy to ! overthrow. I reapocUuliy request that you j will be kind enough to see your way to | exercise such a favourable influence as to I contribute to preventing a recurrence of such unlawful and arbitrary procedure against my countrymen. I would indeed feel deeply gratified if you could use your kindly offices 'to calm the passions of th® unreasonable men, so that justice may be accorded to the subjects of a, friendly nation, who at all times endeavour to live peacefully with their European brethren." The Mayor has replied informing the Consul that he had already communist ted with the police on the matter, and has requested them to take such steps as will prevent a repetition of the disturbances.
