Sir Alexander Taylor, G.C.8., entered the army in 1843, and was made a general in 1878. Ho served in the Sutlej campaign in 1845-46; in the Punjab in 184849; and in the Indian Mutiny in 1857-58. In 'the latter campaign he was wounded, and was twice mentioned in despatches.
