THE TERRITORIALS.
BT SKNTINHX. Allen axd Cahwntim, two Auckland student* at the Royal Military College, Sydney, returned to Sydney by the Maheno on .Monday, they having spent their leave of absence in New Zealand. The arrangements for the annual trainin- camp of the 3rd (Auckland) Regiment, at Papatoeioe. next month, are almost completed, and the camp should be very successful. Although work is, 01 course, the main objective, everything possible to ensure tWcomfort of the men is being done. A sports' committee, of which Major A. Plugge is president, has arranged an excellent programme of sports to be belli during the camp. Besides several foot race?, there will be boxing, wrestling, and Highland dancing competitions, and several inter-company events, including a seven-a-side Rugby football tournament. The prizes for the sports will consist of silver and b.onze medals, and no entrance fees will be charged. The following dates have been fixed by Major-General "Oodley for his inspection of the various training camps in the Auckland military district:—February 29, lot (North Auckland) Regiment, at Whangarei: March 15th. Auckland Field Artillery Brigade, Infantry Signalling Compaiiv, arid No. 3 Company Field Engineers at Hamilton : March 18, 3rd (Auckland)' Regiment, at Papatoetoe; March •JO. 16th "(Waikato) Regiment, at Hamilton - April 26, 11th (North Auckland) Mounted Rifles, at Whangarei; May 3, 3rd (Auckland) Mounted Rifles, at Avonrule ;' May 28th, 4th (Waikato) Mounted Rifles, at Rotorua.
The. memorandum issued for district headquarters regarding the modified training scheme sets out the method of calling parades and arranging for the attendance of the permanent staff instructors, and adds that every endeavour must be made by officers commanding units to render the training by territorial officers and noncommissioned officers efficient, so that they can bo trusted with, the training of the smaller drill centres., and by this means render these latter to come extent independent of tho visits of tho permanent staff instructor. But on no account aie territorials or cadets to bo handed over for training to officers or non-commissioned officers who are not thoroughly competent to impart instruction. It is better that, for the firct few months, at any rate, there should bo fewer drills at drill centres than that men be placed under incompetent instructors. Officers commanding units will be the best judges of the qualifications of their officers-

A rehearsal of the "circular rally," which is to be one of the features in connection with the visit of the chief scout, Lieutenant-General Sir R. S. S. BadenPowell, took place at the outer Domain on Saturday, when there was a good muster of scouts. When the bovs fully understand the various positions and movements the rally should prove a most interesting spectacle. — r As the Domain possesses good scouting cover, advantage was taken of the presence of the troops to test the scouts in woodcraft. The boys put in an interesting afternoon, and are looking forward to Saturday, March 9, for which day a field programme has been prepared. The Greenlane t-ropo is to be reswornin this Wednesday evening. The district commander will be present to assist in the ceremony. Some very favourable impressions have been created by the scouts who have lately paraded with the senior cadet companies. The inspecting officers recognise the value of the scout training, which gives the boys a fine, manly bearing. The proposal to start troops in connection with the parish churches is meeting with much acceptance. The Diocesan Boy Sjcouts' Brigade, when organised, will mean, it is expected, an addition to the local scout organisation of some hundreds of boys. One of the advantages which the promoters possess is that of accommodation for the winter training course. It is also anticipated there will be no difficulty in providing scoutmasters for the Diocesan ' scouts. The scheme has the approval of the Anglican Bishop of Auckland, and should prove a success,
