THEFT FROM COLLECTION BOX.
At the Police Court yesterday, Mr. E. C. Cutten, S.M., presided. Henry Thomas, who had been discovered by the verger prowling about St. Paul's Church, was given sixpence, after he had excited sympathy by a pitiful tale. It was subsequently found that ho had broken into the collection box and helped himself to Is 4d. Accused, who admitted the offence to the police, was sent to gaol for three months. REMANDS. Remands were granted in tho cases of Wm. Gow, charged with being idle and disorderly, James Scott Lennox, charged with a breach of the Bankruptcy Act (ono week), Rhodes Battie, taxi-cab driver, charged with manslaughter (till Tuesday), Cecil Trembath, charged with making a false declaration, and Susanah Hamblyn, charged with having performed an illegal operation. INTEMPERANCE. One first offender had to pay a fine of 5s for the privilege of being drunk on the previous evening. Leigh Hunt, and Ole Omholt were each fined 10s, and Edith Pownall 20s. For drunkenness while in charge of a horse, and a breach of his prohibition order, George Skinner, having no excuse to offer, was fined £2 or seven days. James Wm. Ferguson waa fined £2 or 14 days, Charles McGeehan was fined £2 or seven days, Daniel South £2 or seven days, and Wm. Thomas Hammond £2 or seven days, all for breaches of their prohibition orders. MISCELLANEOUS. James Hill, who was defended by Dr. Bamford, was fined £5 and costs for assaulting a carter named Henry Chapman, tho prosecution being a private one. Ah Poohey,.a Chinaman, was convicted and ordered to pay costs £2 9s on a charge of ill-treating a horse, information being laid by the -Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. A warrant was issued for the arrest of Joseph Holt, who did not appear to answer a charge of using obscene language.
