NOTES AND COMMENTS.

The American and Australasian Davis Cup teams are at present seeing the sights in the thermal districts. Brookes, McLaughlin, Heath, Dunlop, and Wright will play here next Thursday afternoon, at the Eden and Epsom courts. Mr. H. R. Cooke, who has been in communication with the visitors, has ■ not definitely arranged for the games. A special court is being prepared 1 and every effort is being made to cater for the convenience of the public. A charge will be made for admission. Given a fine afternoon a largo attendance of the publio can be expected. Intending competitors: in the provincial championships are reminded that entries will close with the secretary on Wednesday next at eight p.m. Competitors may play their first rounds by v mutual agreement prior to the 27th inst., but the results of such matches must reach the secretary ; "before eight p.m. on; the 26th, inst. The men's events will be the best of-five advantage sets, and the ladies' and combined events the best of three advantage sets. With such a large number of players of equal standard in Auckland, there should be a big entry. The tourney will be held at the Remuera courts on January 27 and '■ 29. ...■::.:>% . > The conference held recently in Christchurch 'between the delegates from the Auckland, Wellington, Taranaki, : and Hawke's Bay Associations, to discuss the question of an interproviheial North Island tournament, was of a very satisfactory nature. It was unanimously decided to hold a three , days' ; tournament at Auckland about Easter. Provided that each centre can send away its best players, with favourable weather the fixture should be very popular. The teams will probably consist of six men and six ladies, and if run on the American system the tournament would provide nearly 144 matches, or nine matches for each player. An open championship meeting and handicap tournament will be held, at Waverley on February 22, 23, and 24, under the auspices of the Taranaki Lawn Tennis Association. The usual events are on the programme, the championships being the best of three sets, and the handicap events 60 points up .for men and 40 points up for ladies. Entries will close on February 16 with Mr. G. H. Graham.
