NATIVE TOWNSHIP TITLES.
THE ONLY REMEDY. [BY TELEGRAPH. —SPECIAL CORRESPOKDENTO • ■ Tacmarontji, Wednesday. In one of his speeches to-day regarding the land tenures in Taumarunui and other native townships, the Prime Minister (Sir, Joseph Ward) said that he was looking forward to the time when the tenants would be enabled to obtain relief from their present position. It had been suggested that* the only way to deal with the question satisfactorily was for the Government to purchase the towns right out, and give the natives full ! value for their land. (Applause.) He did not believe in any policy of confiscation, but if an amicable and equitable arrangement could be arrived atit would bo an excellent thing for all concerned in order that the tenants might bo relieved from the present unsatisfactory form of tenure. Ho said {hat* the Govern-, ment would bo justified, even if it paid rather more than tho towns were worth. (Hear,, hear.) These remarks, needless to say,- were .received with much gratification by those interested.' ,'J:
