SOUTHERN CELEBRATIONS.
A CLOSE HOLIDAY KEPT. PICNICS AND SPORTS. Press Association messages from various centres in the South show that Labour Day was generally observed. In Wellington all business premises were closed, and crowds went out to the Trentham races. About 2500 attended the Labour Day picnic and sports at Miramar. Sir Joseph Ward was present at the sports during the afternoon. A picnic and sports in Napier were attended by about 5000 persons, and proved a great success. The day was celebrated for the first time in Ashbiirton. The proceedings took the form of a procession through the main streets, sports and a picnic. Opportunity was also taken of celebrating Trafalgar Day. Speeches were delivered to children in the domain, and a banquet followed. Mr. Frank Milner, rector of Waitaki Boys' High School, was tho principal speaker. A committee of workers arranged a picnic and sports in Timaru. The cricket season and bowling clubs opened tho season, find the Rifle Association arranged matches at the Patiti range.
