AN APPEAL TO THE PUBLIC.
Sir, — desire through your columns to draw the attention of the public to a most deserving object requiring practical assistance. 1 refer to the Porteous family, who on Thursday evening lost all they possessed by fire. Tho family had just removed into a house in Peel-street, Grey Lynn, and through an accident, the house .took fire, house and contents being totally destroyed. Mr. and Mrs. Porteous and their family of six children—the eldest just starting work, the youngest, a babyare at present owing to the fire in straitened circumstances, and I would respectfully ask that you would allow your columns to be used to give publicity to, this, and that you would receive subscriptions from any who would be willing to - contribute towards assisting-to alleviate the distress.
