FUTURE OF THE RACE.

NECESSITY FOR HIGH IDEALS.

The . Chief Justice (Sir Robert Stout) speaking at the Men s Brotherhood meeting in Wellington on Sunday on "What the Ideal of Brotherhood Means," emphasised the need of individuals having a plan in their lives. They should picture to themselves a better race physically intellectually, and morally. If they did not aim at this being their plan then their race would pass away just as other races in the world had passed away. There were 1 some races of which there was not now a single representative. These had passed away because they were not adapted to the circumstances of life that were set them.

So it would be with the white race if it did not remain physically strong, mentally alert, and if it did not live the social life, which meant a moral life with due regard to everyone of the community. There must be equal rights and freedom for ail. Take the may of Europe! Where there was. the. greatest freedom there were to bo found the greatest scientific men, and where ; there were a free press , and free institutions, freedom was the very breath of humanity. The race had never progressed without selfdenial,, and men and women as social beings had duties to each other. In dealing with all questions.of life.they had not only to allow freedom, but they had to restrict that freedom if it were necessary for the life of humanity. As social beings they had to recognise that men were not equal. They had to look after the weaker ones of their race. - Alcohol. and tobacco were harmful. If only sixpence a week which some might spend on tobacco, were placed in a savings bank for their children, how much better off would they be. If the future was not continually kept in view, then their societies and • everything else would go to nought, and* the race would decline, r There was no hope for the race until each individual believed that his action .would be the law of life (Applause.>. : / y Ie "
