FOOT AND MOUTH DISEASE.

A SERIOUS OUTBREAK. , By . Telegraph.— A»sr)olation.—Copyrlffh*. London, October 10. It is stated by Sir Edward Strachey (Parliamentary Secretary to the Board of Agriculture) that the outbreak of foot and mouth disease in Somerset is serious. The outbreak, which has been discovered in nine centres, is not traceable to foreign fodder. After an immunity of six years in Great Britain, and 15 years in Scotland, the foot and mouth disease reappeared in Edinburgh in February, 1908. It was not stamped out until 244 cattle had been slaughtered at a cost of £4000 m compensation. Its origin on that occasion was traced, to some hay which had come from Holland. An outbreak of the disease was reported from Derbyshire a few weeks ago.
