APPEALS FOR MORE. ROOM.

CHILDREN WAITING FOR PLACES.

Overcrowding in the Auckland schools gave the Education Board , something ..to think, about yesterday. The Mount Eden School Committee wrote suggesting that the Board should set up a side school for the pupils up 'to .the Second Standard,, using say St. Barnabas's Hall for the purpose, or else that additional room should be provided to accommodate the children for whom there is now no room. The normal accommodation of the school is aheadv exceeded by the pupils in attendance, and there are many waiting for admission. v, .

The, chairman of the Board (Mr. G. J. Garland) said that at the end of the year relief would be given by the unloading of the Sixth Standard and the shifting up of the s pupils, which would leave room at the bottom ; but that would not get over the whole difficulty.. All the children waiting for admission now were between five and seven years of age, and ninetenths of ' them were probably under six. It was the clear duty of the Board to provide room in some way. The secretary of the -. Board stated that a similar position had arisen at this time of , the year for the past seven years.
