TRAMWAY LICENSE FEES
SECURED TP LOCAL AUTHORITY. [BX TELEGRAPH. —SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT.] ■ v Wellington, Wednesday. * An important amendment was secured in the Tramways Amendment Bill by Mr. W. F. Massey (Leader of the Opposition) when , the Bill was before the House of : Repre- ' ; sentatives in committee this evening. The comifiittee approved of the proposal that a license of £2 should be charged on all tramcars in services run under deeds of delegation. The proposal in the Bill was that tke §;*; - Minister for Finance might pay over, the fees to the local authority to whom'the ' original authorising order was issued. Mr. Massey objected that the clause should be' mandatory, and not merely permissive. ! x.'" The Hon. R. McKenzie said'that if an ~ amendment was necessary it could be made in the Legislative Council, but Mr. Mas-' ' eoy, said that as the question was one of H" finance the Upper House could not amend ! it. He insisted that the amendment should be made, and eventually the Minister V agreed to substitute the word "shall" for ; •'may."v
