LAND FOR DAIRYING.

Grasses are (writes our Northern Wairoa correspondent) running riot, all classes being now in luxuriant growth. In this ideal climate there is never any serious check to the more hardy varieties, and with the dawn of spring there ensues a profligacy of feed. On the Graham's _ Fern Estate, a large ; area -was dressed with basic slag and sown with an ordinary mixture on August 18, and on September 30 was 6in high, and fit to cagry 15 sheep to the acre. The particular class of land treated is by no means the pick of the district, , but a fair sarcplo of tens of thousands of acres which invite intelligent and scientific treatment. What - the best of river flats, such as at Raupo, will produce, is exemplified on the holding of Mr. Hodgson at Ruawai. He has 80 acres, and winters 60 head of cattle and horses. Last season he milked 26 cows and was reimbursed thereby with monthly cheques totalling as high as £53 14s Bd, his returns for butter-fat for three months being £150. This season he has installed a milking machine and will milk 40 cows. From all sources the income derived from the 80 acres for last season was close on, £500. An extensive area of such land is lying in unimproved condition.- ' :; . ' . 4'
