A TOTJXG, well-dressed, and very dark com-. plexioned woman, who is said to" be a ] native of Tonga, was charged at the Police \ Court yesterday, before Mr. E. C. Cutten, j S.M., with having abandoned "~ her two- i year-old child in WeUesley-street on'Mon- | day afternoon. The case, as outlined by j Bublnspector Hendrey, was that "the accused was seen by.; a constable to ; leave J the child in a doorway and walk off: There; was something suspicious about her actions, j arid the constable spoke to her. She said.,the child's father lived in the • place, | and that she proposed to leave it for him to take care of. She was taken, with the child, to the police station, where she gave the name of Louisa Williams! The child \ was left near the' tram lines, and if it had been allowed to remain there it might have strayed on to the track. The accused bad only recently come to Auckland. V She proceeded against, a man for maintenance at the. Magistrate's Court- on Friday last, alleging that he was the father of the child, but ;no order was made. It was understood that she proposed to return to Tonga, arid consequently she was arrested on the present charge, and the sub-inspector therefore asked for a remand until Friday, which was granted, bail being allowed, in two sureties of £50, or one of £100. • t
