NEW CABLE SCHEME.
AUCKLAND TO SYDNEY DIRECT. A QUICK SERVICE. The manager in. the Pacific far the Pacific Cable Board, Mr. John Milward, who arrived from Sydney on Sunday, leaves for Wellington to-night in order: to consult with the Postmaster-General in respect to the proposed cable between New Zealand and Australia, which the Board'-hopes to lay in the near future. ' Z. . Mr. Milward will probably remain about a month in ' the Dominion. Yesterday he visited Onehunga, with a view to ascertaining what sites would be suitable on the west coast for landing the cable should it be decided to connect the cable with Auckland. He informed a Herald representative that the cable would be laid from Sydney, and it was a matter for arrangement as to whether it would bo connected with Doubtless Bay or Auckland. He indicated that Auckland would possibly be the chosen place. Should this eventuate it would mean that a five minutes' service would be established between Auckland and Sydney direct, and the increase of speed and accuracy, always aimed at in a cable service, would be very great indeed, as, under present arrangements, the re-: transmissions of cablegrams naturally did not make for speed, and there was always a greater chance of inaccuracy in retransmitting. .. ~'. ' ■ The necessary legislation sanctioning the laying of the new cable had been passed in Canada, Australia, and New Zealand, and it only remained for the Imperial"legislation to be passed, this being purely a formal matter. .
The laying of a cable was nowadays reduced to a fine "art. The "real difficulty was the finding of places to lay the cable where it would be least likely to be disturbed. From the'standpoint f of cost the laying of a cable is a big undertaking. The length of the proposed cable from Sydney to Auckland direct is set down at about 1100 miles. The estimated cost is £180 per mile, so that the proposed new cable would necessitate an outlay of £198,000. Prior 'to his departure for Sydney Mr. Milward intends to inspect the station at Doubtless Bay. - v,:. •
