A SCULPTOR'S DECEASE. By Telegraph.—Press Association.— . (Received October 8, 7 p.m.) London, October 6. The death is announced of Sir Charles Lawes-Wittenwronge, sculptor, in his 68th year. Sir Chares Lawes-Wittenwronge, second baronet, was born at Teignmouth, in 1843. He was educated at Eton and Cambridge, and was a famous athlete in his school and college,daye. • He was president of the Incorporated Society of British Sculptors, chairman - of the Lawes Agricultural Trust, and vice-chairman of the Incorporated Society for extending the Rotham- ' sted Experiments in Agricultural Science.

MAJOR-GENERAL HOAD. ■ A BRILLIANT CAREER. Melbourne, October 7. The death is announced of Major-General Hoad, Chief of the .General Staff of the Commonwealth. Military Forces, and ex-Inspector-General. He recently suffered a nervous breakdown, and obtained six months* leave, but his death was unexpected. Major-General Hoad rose from the ranks.

Major-General Hoad, who was born at Goulburn, N.S.W., in 1856, was the first officer born in Australia to be selected as the military head of the Commonwealth forces., Receiving his commission when 28 years of age, he became a captain three years later, a major in 1891, lieutenantgeheral in 1895, and. liout. -colonel in 1899. Major-General Hoad : went to South Africa in .command of the First Australian Regiment, and was mentioned in despatches. He , was also Commonwealth military attache with the Japanese forces in Manchuria, ' and represented a the -'--'Victorian headquarters- staff iat Queen Victoria's jubilee celebrations. ' He was engaged in giving effect to Lord Kitchener's . recommendations at the time of his death.
