KORAN OR BIBLE.

SWEARING A MAHOMMEDAN. A curious point cropped up at the Christchurch Magistrate's Court last week, during the hearing of a claim, for goods supplied. Sheikh Mahommed Din, the husband of plaintiff, on entering the witnessbox., had the oath administered to him in the usual way, and kissed the Bible. The magistrate (Mr. H. W. Bishop) asked him of what faith he was, and he replied " Mahommedan." The magistrate then expressed doubts as to whether' oath sworn on the Christian Bible would be regarded as binding by witness, and he questioned witness on the matter. Witness assured the Magistrate that such an oath was binding on him. On being asked if the Koran was not his sacred book, he replied that the Bible was very near the Koran, and there was a lot that was exactly the same in both. The magistrate remarked that it was usual to swear Mahommedan witnesses on the Koran but the present witness's simple assertion that the Christian oath was binding on him was incapable of proof or disproof, and must be accepted.
