Captain T. Cook, formerly of the steamer Wairoa, is now master of the auxiliary scow Southern Isle, in place of Captain M. McGregor, who has resigned from that vessel.

She was built in 1906 at Middlesbro* for a Norwegian firm.

. On Saturday evening the Squall sailed for Tolago Bay and Gisborne with a full general cargo, consisting mainly of transhipments ex the Rimutaka and Whakarua, from London; Karamea, from Montreal; and Aparima, from Calcutta.

The R.M.S. Maitai is due a* Wellington from San Francisco, via Tahiti and Rarotonga, on Thursday.

Mr. W. B. Cunningham, formerly of the Moana, joined the Maheno as purser at Sydney this trip, relieving: Mr. . Brown.

The New Zealand Shipping Company's steamer Ruapehu . arrived at Dunedin from the Bluff -on Saturday to continue hex Homeward loading. She is expected to leave Dunedin this week for Auckland, and should arrive here about Friday. After loading general cargo at Auckland the Ruapehu goes to Wellington to complete, and sails from the Southern port finally for London on Septemfcer 2L .

HAUROTO FROM SOUTHERN PORTS. The Union Company's steamer Hauroto, Cap tain C. McLean, arrived from Southern and East Coast porta at 12.30 p.m. yesterday, berthing at the Railway Wharf. She left Dunedin on Tuesday afternoon last, calling at all the usual East Coast ports en route, and experienced fine weather throughout the passage. The Hauroto calls at, 2 p.m. to-morrow for Southern porta. TAINUFS PASSENGERS. The Vacuum Oil Company's chartered steamer Cape Breton arrived in the stream shortly after eight o'clock on Saturday night from New York, via Dunedin, Lyttolton, and Wellington. She berthed at the Queen-street Wharf early yesterday morning, where she discharges 40,000 caeca oil. The Cape Breton left New York on June 13 with a full cargo of case oil for New Zealand porta. On the voyage fine to moderate weather prevailed until after leaving Durban on August 22. The steamer then experienced the full force of the wintry gales that howl through the Southern Ocean at this time of tho year. Big waves tumbled aboard, with that well-known suddenness which Jars a vessel from truck to keelson. Numerous minor damage* occurred, these including the smashing in of deckhouse doors, and a straining of the deckhouses themselves. But the vessel eventually battled through without serious injury, and reached New Zealand as stated. On completion of discharge at Auckland, tie Cape Breton proceeds to Newcastle to load coal for South America. THE WAIPORI. The Waipori is making a somewhat protracted passage to Auckland from Newcastle. She has evidently -met with bad weather in the Tasman Sea. The vessel was sighted off Cape Maria Van Diemen by the Maber.o shortly before midnight 'on Saturday. The Waipori should make port early this morning. SYDNEY STEAMER ARRIVES. A late arrival in the stream at Auckland yesterday was the Union Company's turbine steamer Maneno. from Sydney direct, after a passage of four davs one hour. - The purser reports : The Maheno left Sydney at 1 p.m. on Wednesday last and cleared the heads at 1.55 p.m. She experienced light winds and smooth seas till Thursday evening, thence strong head winds and high head seas till making the Three Kings at 9-40 p.m. on Saturday. The weather then moderated somewhat, and moderate to beam seas were encountered down the coast to arrival at an anchorage at 3.50 p.m. The average speed maintained throughout was 13.3 knots an hour. After being granted pratique the vessel berthed at, the Queen-street Wharf at 5.30 p.m. The Maheno sails on the return voyage to Sydney at 5.30 p.m. to-day.
