Dr. Croker,:- of Gisbome, left by the vVimmera yesterday to attend the Australasian Medical Congress at Sydney.

Mr. A. R. Atkinson, who in 1908 eontested tho Wellington East seat at the general elections, has decided that owing to private reasons he will be unable to enter into tho political contest at all this year.

. Mr. David Hansen, formerly a student at Auckland University, has taken the degree of Doctor of Philosophy, at "Karlsruhe University, t Germany. Dr. Hansen is now on his way to New Zealand.

Mr. R. M. Baird, telegraph engineer, ■will visit Helensville and Dargaviile today, and' later will leave for W'liangarei. The object of Mr. Baivd's visit to this district is to consider the advisability of bringing a trunk telegraph circuit irom ftVhangarei to Dargaviile.

Mr. G. L. Cook, district engineer, was fare welled at . Taiiranga by the - Public Works staff On Saturday night on the occasion of his retirement from the service (says a' Press Association message.) _ He was the recipient of two presentations. Mr. J. Hannah becomes resident engineer.

Mr. John Balsillie, a new resident at Kairanga, near Palmerston. North, has "been appointed from 180 applicants to the position of radio telegraph adviser to the Australian Government. Mr. Balsillie's term of appointment is for a number of years at a high salary, the position being an important and responsible one.

Advice has been received from Canterbury that Mr. T. Bowling, the. well-known Auckland horseowner, who resided at Ellerslie, died at Christcliurch on ,Saturday night. Deceased had been in indifferent health for some time past. He ■was well connected at Home, but had no relatives in the Dominion. The body is to be brought to Auckland for interment.

Mrs. Matilda Sophia Beere, wife of Captain G. B. Beere, who died at Devonport last week, was an old colonist of "New Zealand. She arrived here from England in 1863, and after the- Maori war went to the Waikato and-settled with her husband, who was then engaged in farming. In 1881 they_ came to Auckland and took up their residence at Devonport, where the deceased has resided ever since. The late Mrs. Beere, who was 76 years of age, leaves eight children (six : daughters and two sons) and ?ix grandchildren. "\: *

An old resident- of the Lower Waikato, in the person of Mr. Hugh Wylie, died at his residence, " Bankside," Buckland, on Sunday. The deceased, who- was 77 years of age, emigrated from Ireland and had been in the Dominion for nearly half a centurv, having arrived in Auckland bv the ship Blade Eagle in November, 1861. Shortly after arriving, Mr. Wylie joined Colonel Nixon's defence force, then located at Drury. and served during the Maori war until the close of hostilities. He then took up a farm at Buekland, on which he resided until the time of his death. . Deceased is - survived by his widow and a grown-up family of two daughters and three eons, amongst "the latter being Mr. Hugh Wylie, of the Government Audit Department. .
