MR. MCGOWEN'S RETURN.
IMPRESSIONS OF BRITAIN.
AMERICAN IMMIGRANTS.
By Telegraph.—Press Association.—Copyright - r _ Brisbane, September 4. Ms. McGowen (Premier of New South Wales) returned by the Zealandia. He declined to discuss the political position in New South Wales. He said he was most favourably impressed by what he saw in England, but no place on God's earth could compare with Australia, because of her freedom, sunshine, and opportunities.
Mr. McGowen remarked that he was shocked ,at what he saw in the United States and Canada. They were sowing seeds of the whirlwind, allowing themselves to become the dumping-ground- of the scum of the earth. Australia was wiser in her generation, and was keeping the race pure.
(Received September 4, 10 p.m.)
Sydney, September 4.
Mr. McGowen was warmly welcomed by his colleagues on his return home this afternoon. Speaking at a large gathering, he said that Britain was a greater country than he had imagined it to be, and the contrast* between the extremes of wealth and poverty were not so great nor so acute as he had expected from what he had read.
