THE RUGBY GAME.

MEETING OF AUCKL AND UN lON.

The Management Committee of tho Auckland Rugby Union held a meeting in tho Amateur Sports Clubroom last evening, Mr. G. H. Dixon presiding. . There were also present: Messrs. C. : P. Stichbury, 11. .Conquer, S. W. Somerfield, F. J. Ohlson,' and C. V. Langsford (secretary). Referees' Strike: A deputation waited on tho union from tile newiy-lornied Ketcrees' Association, ottering their', services, and asking for otnciai recognition as the Auckland' Kugbj- Hcterees' Association. The standing of tho old association, the members of which refused to . act m iccent matches, was discussed in committee. .The committee decided to officially recognise the new Auckland Rugby Keierecs' Association, and to avail themselves of tho services or the members in future matches uuaer the union's jurisdiction. Air. Dixon then proposed the following;—" That this committee regret exceedingly the circumstances which had arisen in regard to the . (old) Auckland Referees' Association,, and recognise to the fullest possible extent the services rendered to Auckland football in past years by tho members of. that association.'' This proposal was carried. Junior Representative Match: The Ilikurangi Union wrote stating they were sending a representative team to Auckland to play tho junior representatives. It Was decided to play .the- match at Alexandra Park on September 9. - V Benefit to Bonella: Tho committee made arrangements to give a benefit to Mr. A. (Scotty) Bonella on September, 9. The programme will comprise the Hikurangi-Junior .Representatives match, which will be played lit two p.m., and "this will bo followed by a senior seven a-side tournament." The entries will close next Wednesday. It was decided to charge sixpence to' ground, and sixpence to stand. Tho free list will be entirely suspended, and officials, players, find public alike will bo charged admission. ' Suburban Clubs: Mr. Somerfield brought forward the question of providing referees for matohes between suburban clubs.' Ho said there wore teams, at Ellerslie, Orakei, Panmuro, Pakuranga, Otahuhu, Papakura, and Manukau. These " clubs played homo and homo v matches, and " they , : desired to / play under the union's jurisdiction, and asked that .union's referees be appointed to control their matches. The committee favourably considered tho proposal, and decided to ask representatives of the clubs to wait oil tho committee before tho next annual meeting. '

The rani-Sothlancl football match was played, to-day in fine but windy, weather in tho presence of about 2500 ''spectators. The game was fast and exoiting -.nroughout, and ended in a lucky win- for Taranaki by 12 points (goal from a try, unconverted try,' and potted goal) to 11 (goal from a try, and two unconverted tries). Th© Southland forwards were superior all round, but the Taranaki backs were far ahead of . tho local backs, and their y splendid,, line-kicking against a strong wind in the second spell saved the game. Th© play of tho Southland forwards confirms the opinions of experts that they are the finest pack, that has re-, presented the province for many yoars. INTER-COLLEGIATE MATCH. ; [by TELEGRAPH.PRESS association - .] : Christchtjrch, Wednesday. The inter-Collegiate match, Christ's College v. Wanganui Collegiate School, resulted •in a win for tho first-named by 34 points (five goals from tries, and three tries) to Wanganui's 6 (two penalty goals). HOCKEY.

LADIES' TOURNAMENT

DEPARTURE OF AUCKLAND TEAM. Tho representatives of the Auckland Ladies' Hockey Association left by last evening's Main Trunk train, on route for Wellington, where : they will take part in the New Zealand ladies' hockey tournament. Tho party was given an enthusiastic send by a largo crowd. The playing members of the party are: Misses Little, Pay ton, Ross, Brophy, Muldoon, '■ Goodwin, Tramain,' Mather, Bennett, Daines, Probert, Do Launay, Wylie, Kenny, Cooke. Mrs. Payton is accompanying tho party as chaperono, Miss Pearl H. Dawson as manager, and Miss Matis Cooko as captain, of tho team. Accompanying the players . are Misses Blackburn, Campbell, and Crofts. The tournament will : commence ;on : Saturday next, in three sections as follows:—• ■

A Section: Hawke's Bay, Canterbury A, Taranaki, Marlborough, and Manawatu B. B Section: Auckland, Nelson, Canterbury B, Wellington A, and Buller.
