EX-INSPECTOR GILLIES.

[BY TELEGRAPH.SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT.] Wellington, Monday. When, the Hon.. G. Fowlds was last in Christchurch. Mr. J. McCombs brought under his notice the case _of ex-Inspector Gillies, and stated that the' late Mr'. T. E. Taylor shortly before his death expressed the opinion that Mr. Gillies was suffering an excessive penalty for what was actually the only mistake of his career. It was Mr. Taylor's intention to'urge that Mr. Gillies should be placed in the position that he would • have occupied in regard to his pension if he had been permitted to complete his 40 years of service. The difference between Mr. Gillies' present pension and that which he would have received .if he had completed 40 years' service (over'£3oo per annum) is about £36 per annum.'' Mr. McCombs, at the Minister's request, put the matter in writing and asked that Mr. Gillies' case might be reconsidered. The Minister , has replied that the suggestion that a special grant be made to ex-Inspec-tor Gillies to compensate him for the loss of pension sustained by his retirement before he became entitled to the maximum allowance; under the Public Service Superannuation Act will receive consideration.
