RIOTS AGAINST JEWS.

THE MILITARY CALLED OUT

STREETS CLEARED BY

SOLDIERS.

RIOTERS STONE THE POLICE

WOMEN ROUGHLY HANDLED.

JEW'S FLEEING FROM HOMES.

By Telegraph.Press —Copyright (Received August 23, 9.5 p.m.) , /London, August 23. The anti-Jewish riots have been renewed at Ebb Vale and Tredegar (Monmouthshire) on a large scale. Riots have also taken place in tne South Wales towns of Cwmdu (Glamorganshire), and Brynmawr (Brecknockshire.

At Ebbw Vale, on the renewal of the trouble, the Riot Act was read, and the military cleared the streets by means of a bayonet charge. One soldier was badly injured in the conflict with the rioters.

Rioting and looting was also renewed at Tredegar early to-day. The crowd wrenched the railings from private residences, but there was a stampede when the military appeared. , A number of women were roughly handled, and the looters drove them from their homes.

One woman, who was lying ill in her bed, ran out into the streets in a terrified state, shrieking for safety. The crowd seized her bed and threw it into the street.

Many rioters have been injured in various localities, and numerous arrests have been made. Over 30 injured persons have been taken to the hospitals.

Ten thousand rioters assembled at Jwmdu and did great damage. The military were summoned, but the rioting was continued till late at night. It was eventually quelled. The mobs attacked the church and other buildings at Brynmawr. Serious conflicts between the police and the rioters took place, the mob throwing stones and bottles at the police. On the arrival of two bodies of cavalry partial quietude was restored. v

Hundreds of Jews are quitting Tredegar and Ebbw Vale by every train, leaving their homes undefended and uncared for.

It is said that the riots are the culmination of a long-standing grievance concerning house rents against the Jews, who are the principal landlords.

The Jews are also accused of exercising a monopoly in several classes of trade, such as furnishing, clothing, and jewellery. It is stated that they compel their tenants to obtain their furniture from them on •the hire system.

• It is further stated that many of the poorest tenants have been evicted for failure to pay their rent.
