BOROUGH COUNCILS.

PARNELL. The Parnell Borough Council ; met last evening. Present: Messrs. R. •S. Briggs (Mayor), W. Thomas, G. Scarborough, A. A. Brook, R. Maxwell, C. Kay, T. Long, J'. 11. Brown, and C. E. Palmer. Mr. Dove, manager of Millar's West Australian Hardwoods Company, wrote stating that the rubbish tip off Sehvyn Terrace, which was in the midst of a residential area, was now a "rat warren," and was a menace to the health of the whole city. The officials of the company had communicated with the Borough Council by telephone when persons were seen depositing rubbish on the tip; but the matter seemed to have been overlooked. On the motion of the Mayor, seconded by Mr. Long, it was agreed to offer a reward of £5 for the conviction of any person found depositing rubbish on this site. NEWMARKET. The Nowmarkei Borough Council met last night. Present: The Mayor (Mr. D. ; Teed), and Messrs. S. Donaldson, W. J. Jaffrey W. Fookes, F. J. O'Meara, McColl, and W. Hamblin. The Auckland City Council wrote stating they could not accede to the Newmarket request to pay half the cost of improving Carlton Gore Road. Preliminary approval by the Government of the Council's application for £30,000 loan was received. It was decided to "place subscription lists for the T. E. Taylor memorial fund in the Council's office. A letter was ordered to bo sent to the | Tramways Company asking that "car stop" signs be placed in Newmarket. _ | ; A poll on the Council's proposed loan of £30,000 is to be taken on September 6. MOUNT ALBERT. The Mount Albert Borough Council met last evening. Present: Messrs. J. Coyle (Mayor), day, Wilson, Freeman, O'Leary, Astley, and Turner, Mr. C. Hardy wrote offering to donate £50 towards the cost of the Council procuring land to form a public road connecting Mount Roskill Road with Mount Albert Road, giving access to Mount Albert recreation grounds and domain. He stated that in other respects this would bo a very useful road, and if the land were not taken up it might bo built upon." The price asked for the land was £250. The matter was referred to the Works Committee. On the suggestion of the Mount Eden Borough Council it • was decided to alter the name of John-street to Cromwell-street, the former being,the name of that portion of the street in tho Mount Eden district. A ratepayer wrote with reference to a watercourse on his land near , the Kingsland Road. The Mayor said that this was a question of the Council retaining its right to the natural water channel. After purchasing the land the owner had unwittingly built right over' the channel, and the water now gave some considerable trouble. It could not bo diverted, as other properties would be affected. The matter was referred to tho Finance Committee. It was suggested by the Mayor that the Drainage Board lay down a connecting sower to take off drainage of flood lands round about the Kingsland Cricket Ground.. He said that this was a splendid time for owners of property to put their ' hands in their pockets and offer the Drainage Board to pay the cost of a line of pipes to carry off stormwater. This, he said, could ; be done quite easily in connection with the laying of the sewer, and stormwater. would eventually •bo carried into the Archhill Gully. ONEI-lUNGA. The Onehunga Borough Council met last evening. Present :Messrs. John "Rowe (Mayor), W. Colledge, R. Dillicar, J. Simpson, J. E. Baldwin, S. R. Skinner, A. McColl, T. H. Horn, I. Lomas, and C. C. Davis. Resolved that a subscription list in connection with tho late Mr. T. E. Taylor fund bo placed in the Council office, and that business people be asked to accept others. The sum of £193, Government subsidy on rates, was received from the Treasury Department. Matters in coimection with the establishment of the zoological gardens were . considered, Mr. C. C. Davis declaring himself "dead against the zoo." After much discussion the Mayor moved and it was : agreed that tho matter be roferred to the Council in committee. A member of the Borough Council applied for a plumber's license,, as he wished to do some plumbing work at his own houses. A long discussion followed, the Mayor urging that the application and certificate be referred to the borough drainage inspector. ■ On tho motion of Mr. Dillicar the license was granted. Messrs. Brookfield and Schnauer, on behalf of Mr. K. Sutherland, whose property adjoins the esplanade, wrote accepting the offer of the Council to appoint arbitrators in connection with Mr. Sutherland's claim' for compensation in connection with land said to be taken in constructing the esplanade. Referred to the Council in committee. - - '• a The following tenders were received for the erection of the Coronation Ambulance HallG. H. James, £449; W. Maud, jun., £674; A. J. Hemming, £689 F. S. Stokes, £495. As the estimate was £350, it was resolved to hold James's an l Stokes's tenders, and consider same with St. John Ambulance Society. In reply to Mr. McColl, the Mayor stated that the Mangere Road Board, the. controlling body, was getting - the plans prepared • by Mr. Moore for the construction of the new Mangere bridge. It was decided .to attend to & dangerous hole in Catherine-street, also to a' hole in Lower Queen-street, near the wharf, into which, Mr. Simpson reported, an old man fell on Saturday night.
