The - grade championships conducted by - the Auckland Hockey Association were continued on Saturday afternoon in pleasant weather.' The match between . University ; and Auckland at Remuera virtually decided the senior championship. At the conclusion of the previous Saturday's play University had an advantage over. Auckland of two points,-' and its match with the latter team having-resulted in a draw it may Iks fairly presumed 7 tjiat the honours of the season will be won by the University team. The match, was the centre of interest for followers of the game, and they were given a fine exhibition of the scientific points of the game. Of the other senior games, that between United and Ponsonby, played at Remuera, also ' resulted in a draw, each side scoring two goals. North Shore beat Christchurch by 3 goals to 1. » SENIOR GRADE. Having a definite obstacle to surmount, Auckland attacked vigorously, and, though confronted with an admirable defence, their effort was successful, Micro driving into the net. University displayed fine combination, and a rapid exchange of passes among the forwards enabled '.Reynolds to score. The position was unaltered when the spell closed. In the second half tho play was of absorbing interest. Bi th teams demonstrated their abilities in attick and defence, and neither side had incieased its points when the. spell was within a few minutes of its close. Auckland once more assumed the offensive, and a scramble in the circle ended in University having a penalty bully given ; against'them. Mason seized the opportunity, and from the bully the ball was sent by him into the net. The final scores were: University ... . ... 2 Auckland ... ... - 4 Mr. Baddiley was referee. CHAMPIONSHIP SHIELD. I | WELLINGTON'S NARROW ESCAPE. [BT TELEGRAPH.— ASSOCIATION.] ! - I Wellington, Sunday. Another challenge has been stalled off by the holders of the hockey shield. Hawke's Bay met Wellington at Day's Bay yesterday .and suffered defeat by three goals to two, At half-time tho challengers seemed sure of victory, the score standing at two goals to nil in their favour. The ground was slippery and this niiltated against a good display of hockey. ; Owing to an injury bustained . on : Friday, Bullick (Hawke's . Bay) ■■ stood down, Nicliolls taking his place. The play in the earlv stages was somewhat desultory and entirely lacking the excitement of the Canterbury match, Poor hitting bv the forwards—Wellington's particularly— much in evidence, and detracted ' from trie play, which was too cramped " Sticks" was a verv frequent offence, both teams offending in this direction. After 20 minutes' play Hallett scored by a fine shot, which was too fast for Dwyer. Then Shattky scored. Dwyer ran out, and, failing to stop, tho hit in was easy. The Hawke's Bay goals followed esOh other in quick succession, and it did not appear as if Wellington was infusing any life into the game. The visitors still attacked and exhibited far and away more dash than their opponent. Individually, tho challengers shone, and the tension among the Wellington barrackers caused by the two goals against Wellington did not appear to awaken the home team. Neither side showed a trace of combination during tho first spell, which ended: Hawko's Bay, 2 goals; Wellington, nil. On resumption Wellington came on gamely, and in a couple of minutes Strack scored for the defenders: 2—l. From this point the game was more in Wellington's favour. From a corner G. Strack stopped the ball and C. Strack hit in easily: 2—2. The game became more exciting, open, and spectacular, and soon after C. Campbell passed to Loader, who scored, and the game qnded: Wellington ... ... 3 goals Hawko's Bay ... ... ... . 2 goals LADIES' MATCHES. •. _____ - j - - SENIOR GRADE.
