Applications for advances to workers continue It) come in largely, averaging of late about- 50 per week. In reply to a query as to whether a worker can raise £600 for a building on the security of land worth £400, under the workers' scheme, the Department says it can only lend up to £450. 'the idea is to help those receiving not more than £200 per annum to build homes. Under the Advances to Settlers Act, however, £600 could be raised on the £400 security, which would be available to the borrower as he required to make his progress payments. The valuation fee under the workers' branch is only 7s 6d, irrespective of the amount required : under the advances to settlers scheme it is fixed on a prescribed scale, ranging from 10s 6d to £2 2s. The legal charges in either case, are very moderate.
