CADET DEPARTMENT.
TROUBLE IN WELLINGTON.
Tiik Wellington branch of the Now Zealand Educational Institute met on Friday night, the object of tho meeting being, according to the circular sent out, "To consider what action, if any, shall bo taken in the matter of Major McDonald's attempt to penalise a school and teacher on account of tho course'taken by tho latter at a mooting of -the institute held to consider the commandant's proposed scheme of physicals drill for the schools."
A lengthy discussion took place, when the general expression of opinion was that the position was intolerable. It, was held (says the New Zealand Times) that the members hat! 41 perfect right to meet and discuss freely and openly anything affecting their profession. Indignation was expressed generally that an outside person should set himself up as a censor of the institute. It was almost unanimously agreed that tho military aspect .should be left out entirely, as the question which affected the teachers was that of freo speech, and they wished to establish their right, to that. One member said that the commandant's attitude was absolutely indefensible. Ho had not a leg to .stand on. Another member said that, when the cadet officers were in mufti they were "just their plain selves." and they had a right of full and free discussion on any matter brought before the institute.
The following resolution was carried: — " That the whole corrospondeco read at this meeting be sent to tho executive of the N.Z.E.1., and that it lie asked to make all inquiries and to take such procedure in this matter as it considers expedient."
