A HOSPITAL LEVY.

THE CITY OVERCHARGED.

STATE VALUER'S ERROR.

I The Auckland City Council lias been asked | to contribute £6679 towards the funds o! tie Hospital and Charitable Aid Board for I the administration of its functions during ! 1911-12. It has boon found, however that ; the levy payable by Die city has been' overi estimated by £742, and there hap been a j proportionate error in cock of the amounts i which the other contributing bodies have i been asked to pay. ; In the notice sent, to ail the interested j local bodies, it is stated that tho estij mated annual cost of tho maintenance of I institutions under the Board and of charit. j able aid, is £43,541 ss, and that tho rata : upon which tho contributions were calculated was two-tbirt-ocnthfi of a penny in I the pound on tho ratable value of tha i ratable property in the hospital district : Tho ratable value of tho area under tho ! Auckland City Council was taken m | £10,419,236, arid on this haws the city's : contribution was determined at £6679. ! Tho town cleric ascertained from tho i land valuer's department that an error , bad been made by it, tho figures or the : gross capital value being furnished to the I Hospital Board, instead of those for the

rauiuie capita! value. As great confusion | would bo involved by.tho correction of tho j error, the town clerk suggested that tho Hospital Board should acknowledge the error and ask that tho lovy .should bo. allowed to stand for the current year on i condition that the City Council would bo I given credit for tho overpayment, which i would bo deducted from' next year's deI mand. The. correct amount on which the | levy should have been calculated « ! £9.261,501, and the overcharge on ! £1,157,735 represents £742 & 9d. The matter came before the City Conn-' | oil last evening, and as no reply had been received from tho Board, the letter was I received.
