AUCKLAND COMPETITIONS.
Ik soliciting a grant from the Auckland Oily Council of the same amount, as last year (£SO), the executive of the Auckland Competitions Society stated in a letter received by the Council last, evening, that the festival would Ik> on a scalo never previously attempted in the Dominion. The competitions would extend over 12 days, and £500 would lie expended in trophies and prizemoney. The profit made on last year's festival was sufficient to meet only the preliminary expenses, and the largo prizemoney and the engagement of highly-quali-fied judges from Australia, incurred a heavy financial risk. The desire, however, to make Auckland lead the rest of the Dominion in the encouragement of music, literature, and art, inspired the executive to enlarge, the scope of the undertaking. The appeal Mas referred to the Finance Committee.
