BISHOP CROSSLEY.

FIRST VISIT TO PAPAKURA,

[BY TKLEGRArn. —OWN COIUIESPONDENT.] pArAKriu, Wednesday. Tub Bishop of Auckland (Dr. Crossley) paid Papakura parish a visit to-day. Ho held a service in the church at three o'clock, when there was a largo congregation. Afternoon tea was subsequently provided in tho hall for all visiting friends, and this evening a complimentary dinner took place, at which there were 150 people present. Mr. A. Willis (chairman of the Town Board) road an address of welcome on behalf of the local authorities, and speeches were made by Mr. E. D. McLennan, Captain Colbeck, tho vicar of the parish, Captain Clayton, Mr. C. 11. Lupton, Mr. W. D. Moody, the Rev. J. 15. Smellie (Presbyterian), the Rev. W. Rowo (Methodist), tho Rev. 11. Mason, tho "Rev. J. B. Dobson, and tho Rev. T. Fisher. In his reply, tho Bishop expressed his great pleasure at mooting the people of the parish and partaking of their hospitality. As so much had been said about bishops, he thought he would also have something to say about them. The greatest blessing he could have would be to have among his people men of grit and good example. He had been told that tho interest in the Melanesian Mission was greatly waning, but he sincerely hoped that such was not the case. He referred to a remark made that other sections of tho Church were only "chins of the old block," with which he cordially agreed, but he confessed that ho did not wish for any more chips, for the block should stand solid. He was much tempted to speak upon religious education in tho schools but had made up his mind, as a young Bishop, to wait until he understood tho circumstances of the country better.

Mr. P. W. Jones, on behalf of the church people of the district, thanked those present, for their assistance in welcoming the Bishop..
